Why might we find cute the things that we find cute?
Interestingly, Russian has no special word for cute. The closest is "милый" (milyi) - which has a meaning closer to that of "appealing" or "pleasing" when used as a general adjective, or "darling" when used as an endearment. It's a simple distinction. Cute is adorable and fluffy. Kawaii is the same, but taken to the kind of extreme that makes you want to pull your eyes out and start decapitating humanity left right and centre. --Vitenka
