Most routes through this junction take you through two sets of traffic lights in about 5 metres. The result is that PeterTaylor's relatives, and presumably a fair number of other non-locals who travel east through it, generally jump a red light without realising it.
I've never noticed anyone doing it, and the timings are such that it's rarely a problem (since the two sets of lights are apparently linked). -- Senji.  I agree it's confusing though.
(PeterTaylor) The problem is approaching when both sets (on their route) are red and thinking that there's only one set, so that they cross the first line without realising it was there.
They are definitely linked.  Initially the link timings seemed very irritating to me, but I realised the logic behind them.  This morning, for example, each of the two side branches turned green and a few more cars came through (all turning right, towards each other) than could fit in the tiny space between the two sets of lights: resulting in two L-shapes of cars each almost blocking the other.  However, the lights immediately turn to green for those sections, so these blockages cleared immediately.  Which if people are going to be stupid and drive onto a junction when there isn't room for them on it, is at least the next best thing.  I've seen worse at the Mill Road / Gonville Place ParkersPiece corner junction. --AC
The lights appear to be linked, but only to cause maximum inconvenience.  At least attempting to turn right or stagger across the junction from Mansel Way, the first set of traffic lights will turn green Quite Some Time before the second.  This requires quite a bit of stopping and starting.  In the (admittedly unlikely) event that lots of people should want to do this, things could get rather messy (though as AC noted as I was writing this, they don't quite). --NT
There's a cycle path that goes past that junction. And it has a lamp-post right in the middle of it. Ouch. --Admiral
I've nearly run a red light here - turning right out of Mansel way you go through a green light and then have to stop immediately after having completed my turn. This is unexpected to say the least. And that lampost is already famous! --Gwyntar
Pray, do tell. --Admiral
This and the Elizabeth Bridge signpost in mid-cycle-lane have photographs on the Cambridge Cycling Campaign webpages, I think.  Or something similar.  --AC
