Four blind men walk into a yard where a rug is drying on a clothesline. "Post", says one, walking into a post. "Rope", says a second upon encountering the clothesline. "...and a carpet", says the third quietly as his hand encounters the rug. "Elephants... we're surrounded by elephants!", the fourth cries out in distress.

Four blind men came to a big city, found a zoo, found the cage with the elephant... and weren't allowed inside. They couldn't just go prodding and poking animals whenever they felt like it, they were told, it'd put the elephant off his food.
Well, they couldn't exactly go home ignorant! So they asked a sighted passer-by to describe the elephant in the cage to them. "How many legs does it have?" "Four." "And what colour is it?" "Grey." "What does it eat?" "Grass, vegetables..." "What about the ears, then, what are they like?" "They're big and floppy..." "What about his tail?" "His tail is quite small, actually. Just a tiny little thing." "And what's his face like?" "Well - just an ordinary elephant face. His nose is moving, his eyes are red..." "Can you see his teeth?" "Yeah, there's two big tusks poking out. Why?" "Let's go home", said the eldest of the blind men. "We've wasted the trip. I know what an elephant is now. It's just what they call rabbits around here."
