A game based upon the HalfLife (and now the 'Source' HalfLifeTwo?) engine.
What is actually meant by "source" in this context? - CorkScrew the clueless
The name of the new engine is 'source' and thus the new CounterStrike game is named "CS-Source"  --Vitenka
Damn. CorkScrew was hoping they'd open-sourced it :(
Not a hope.  --Vitenka

Counterstrike is game in which counter terrorist and terrorists are pitted against each other in short bouts armed with real life weaponry that actually kills people in a few shots. Also limits each player to one rifle, one pistol, one grenade and one flash bang. All this makes it a more realistic multiplayer experience than most shooters designed for single player mode where players run around with half a dozen super guns each or are unable to do any damage to each other.

A similar concept to TomClancy?'s games like GhostRecon? and RainbowSix?.

CounterStrike popularised several important concepts, which have been much imitated since.  Round-based gameplay, where once your avatar is killed it stays dead until the next round starts.  To tie into this, whilst a ghost you get to watch the action through the eyes of your TeamMate?(s).  Limited weapon selection (as already mentioned) and having only HitScan? weapons was another major change from most other FPS?s of its time.

Except the grenades...and didn't some of the assault rifles have a grenade launcher mode in the early versions? -- Xarak the pedant.
Grenades do hit location damage the headshot grenade kill is rare but does happen, there have been no grenade lunchers since beta 3 as far as i know but before that there could have been but unlikely. The limit is also 2 flash bangs and 1 smoke and 1 explosive grenade. - Artan

Vitenka has some quick experience with, and comments on, the new version:

Oh, I didn't know this at the time - but.
CounterStrike-Source (Beta, is CS ever NOT Beta something or other?)
Anyway, CS-Source is nice.  It's still CS of course, so I still loathe it - but the graphics engine is nicely understated and actually runs on machines that mortals posess.  (Without tweaking, even.)
Barells wobble slightly when you brush against them - but take effort to push over.  When pushed, they roll with real weight.  Bump mapped walls are in evidence - but you actually have to look for it.It's nicely understated.  The engine is just happily chuntering away powering the game - and not getting in your face the way it did in the e3 demos.
So yeah - I actually have hope for the source engine.  If only they'd ported TFC first...
One other quick thing - Steam (the autoupdater, key verifer etc. utility) is just as unstable as it ever used to be.  "Bad ticket" errors plague me.  Fecking thing must DIE.

Addition - the physics engine is bunk.  Made entirely of DuctTape.  It does work, as described, wonderfully most of the time - but in edge cases it becomes truly bizarre.  When kicked into corners, objects tend to randomly jerk about and pass through each other.  To be fair, this is probably acceptable for a game - but it does break the immersion quite badly.  Having said that - find the bucket on dust (or anything really, but the bucket is light and doesn't get destroyed by a few kicks) and push it into the corner.  Stand next to it, and watch it dance.  --Vitenka

It's a bit of a gaming joke that online CounterStrike is the realm of clueless 12 year olds and people with nothing better to do. For example - http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/171762 . I have no idea how accurate this is since I don't play online games. -- Xarak

Not entirely accurate yes there are 12 year olds and stuff but mainly its not just those types of people. -- Artan
Hah.  CounterStrike is a lovely little game, marred only by the fact that it is played by CounterStrike players.  For a very long time at least, it was the epitome of 'nasty gamer' chic.  --Vitenka
