While working on the CISRA puzzles, someone idly wondered how many films there are that the whole team had seen, and someone said probably only 10 or 20. I reckon more than that, and what better way to find out than a wiki page?

So I've listed some films which I've seen and which I think are well-known enough that the others might have all seen them too.

If you haven't seen a film in the list, move it to the Disqualified list. (I was going to say delete it, but this way stops people inadvertently re-adding deleted films.) If you've seen a film which isn't listed and think everyone else might have seen it too, add it to the Candidates list. (Not necessarily just CISRA people - everyone feel free to edit this if you want.) And I'll probably think of some more and add them. --Rachael
Clarification: Are others meant to be free to disqualify films, or are you only wanting the team to do that? --Admiral
I meant the "everyone feel free" to apply to both bits. --Rachael

Discussion

It's interesting deciding what films are worth putting. For example, I've seen all the Disney/Pixar? films, but there's probably not much point me listing them all; it doesn't convey as much information, and is less efficient, than if  someone who doesn't generally watch them were to list the one or two they have seen. (Although I did put Toy Story anyway because I reckoned it was the most widely-seen.) And, conversely, I don't tend to watch Tarantino films, but they're generally popular, so I've made a point of listing the one I have seen.
It's also non-obvious where to get more suggestions from; lists of highest-grossing films will be useful, but also films which get repeated every Christmas (hence Mary Poppins), kids' films which came out in the 80s, films which were hyped at the time and since forgotten but which everyone probably saw at the time (hence Independence Day), films which are relatively obscure but have a cult geek following... --Rachael
I added the Bond series on the "always on television" grounds and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because if you've seen Mary Poppins you've probably seen that. I decided 2001 was probably not quite universal enough. Hmm. Top Gun? Am I in the wrong circle here for that to be universal? Probably. --SF
I'd have thought it likely, I've seen it.  And there are people who've not seen 2001?  Heretics.  --Vitenka
I've read the book. Why should I be disappointed by the film? --PT
The film is pretty.  --Vitenka
But that's about all it is. --Admiral
Which puts it one-up on the book :)  --Vitenka

Possibly 'films shown on plans' and 'films released when young that your parents would have approved of' (eg Bambi) might be sources to mine.--DR

I was surprised how many here have not seen Blade Runner.  Is there a reason?--DR
Very few people here are old enough to have seen it when it first came out. That may have something to do with it. --Edwin

Hmm. We're going to have to define "seen" here I think. Does it mean "know you have watched this beginning to end?", or does it mean "have seen and can vaguely remember bits of it?" --SF
