A game in which, from the perspective of your avatar (as opposed to a camera in the room, overhead, or looking over its shoulder) you run around and shoot enemies.
With a history ranging from the venerable 'maze' through wolfenstein (able to turn at other than ninety degree intervals! Monsters which have some defencive AI!) doom (walls that do not have to be aligned to a grid! Areas with light levels! elevated areas!) quake (true 'look up and down' 3d environments) and onwards... HalfLife (plot! really good team based AI!) DeusEx (limited rpg elements! Story!)
Many people do not like the genre at all. That's fair enough, but they are missing out.
Although exactly what they are missing out on is hard to define. There's an fps to suit any taste.
