At an early age, people are conditioned to be so afraid of the word "fnord" that they blank it out from their mind whenever they encounter it, leaving just a general groundless feeling of low-grade anxiety/alarm.

This is then exploited by the media - occurences of the word are inserted into (e.g.) newspaper headlines and quotes from people whose views do not fit in with those of the Powers That Be. Adverts, of course, are blissfully free of fnords, encouraging people to seek relief in consumerism.
