What socially identifies you as being male or female, as opposed to your physical sex.

Usually, someone born with two X chromosones will also be inclined to act in a (somewhat) socially feminine manner, and one with an X and a Y chromosone will act in a socially masculine manner.  Some to a greater degree than others, and it is naturally a matter of BothNatureAndNurture?.  What "socially feminine" and "socially masculine" behavior means in this context is contentious at best and varies by culture.

Once in a while, though, you get someone who strongly feels that thier sex does not match thier psychology and social desires - thier gender - for whatever reason.  A person like this who is physically female would be incredibly distressed during Puberty? to find that they are growing breasts.  It Squicks them out: they are literally repulsed by the thought.

This results in a TransGender? person (FemaleToMale? in that particular instance: Talia Andrew Black is an example of the much more common (for some bizzare reason) MaleToFemale? TransGender?): this is called Gender Dysphoria in the medical literature.  When the desire to change the sex to match the inner gender is fulfilled, you have a TransSexual (and the differing opinions of what that means are discussed in the link).

The evidence is beginning to suggest a genetic coding error resulting in a brain with (for example) male biochemistry in a female body is the cause.

Interestingly enough, there are some cultures with recognized third genders: a person who would be TransGender? in Britian might be of the "Two-Spirited" gender in Navajo? culture.  I beleive there's an asiatic Indian example too, the name of which I can't quite recall: they tend to be adopted by the preisthood of a particular InterSex? god(ess?). If there are only two recognized genders in a culture, however, gender dysphoric individuals are inevitably TransGender?.

Has absolutley no proven link to whether you're homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual, despite popular thought to the contrary.  In fact, it's fairly common for a FemaleToMale? individual attracted to females to beleive themselves to be lesbians (because most people unfortunately think that "TomboysAreFineItsSissiesICantStand?"), only to find out that it doesn't work for them and begin to Transition?.  HormoneTherapy? doesn't have a predictable effect on SexualOrientation? - I know of at least one MaleToFemale? who was, is, and will always be attracted to women: and at least one FemaleToMale? who was a straight woman and transitioned into a straight man (to his enduring surprise). -- Elliott Belser

Also a sort of marker in Linguistics?

Sometimes the genders of a certian language are related to masculinity and femininity (Originally, at least:  'o' is typically masculine in Spanish, and 'a' feminine, but chicken is "Pollo," and never to be confused with "Polla", which is a slang term for male genitals).

Sometimes not.  Ki-mono (Clothing, lit. "Wearable Stuff"), Tabe-mono (Food, lit. "Edible Stuff"), and Nami-mono (Beverages, lit "Drinkable Stuff") are all of the gender -mono, "Inanimate objects" in Japanese.  ...Yes, this is the actual linguistic definition of the word gender.  Stop looking at me like that.
