A disturbingly neat chiller, shown on BBC1 at Hallow'een, ooh, many years ago, when I was... er... younger.

All week prior to showing it they plugged it like it was going to be one of those "interactive investigations" where they'd sit in the living room of some "haunted" family house and wait for the ghosts to arrive.  (This was at the time when they had the "ReefWatch?" program with the blonde woman in a big bubble-helmet-diving-gear-thing and the "BirdWatch?" one on an exotic island with BillOddie?, although that could be a bizarre form of torture).

Anyway, it looked like a typical studio-based affair with expert guests, hosted by Michael Parkinson, which would cut every now and then to the house, which was also on a video wall at the back of the studio, all of which supported the "this is a real program" feeling rather than the "this is fictional" feeling.

If anyone wants to know what happened read on...

That should do it.

OK.  The simple plot is this:  Meet the family of haunted house fame, interview the family, especially the cute kids. Show studio outfitted with phone lines where people can phone in their paranormal experiences as Hallow'een unfolds.  Studio:  Interview some "experts" in paranormal phenomena.  House:  Show the techies putting in "ghost detecting" equipment (tape recorders, cameras, etc.).  Studio: more experts - history of the house, including the rather gory death of the previous occupant (died violently and then got eaten by the cats locked in the house).  House:  cut back to the house showing kids sat in living room playing board games.  Cut to parents in kitchen, loud muffled bang, not much else.  Studio: more blah, phone ins, etc..  House: First round of bangs shown to be one of the kids, acting up (seemingly) so as to prove that their bogeyman that's been causing them sleepless nights is actually real.  Kid is kinda vague though and seems a bit out of it.  Studio: more blah on wossname.  Parky looks up occasionally from the couch to the video wall, nothing interesting happening.  Tries talking to the ground presenter at house but can't get through.  Still have video feed of living room + kids playing board games.  More blah.  Phone-ins get a bit strange, glass coffee tables exploding for no reason.  Studio light blows.  More similar phone ins, video quality degrades a bit (get official-looking BBC "we are experiencing difficulties" sign.  Random phone in gets through and points out that the video wall showing the kids playing board games has a clock in that says the time 2 hours ago.  Another light explodes.  Studio tries again to contact the house.  Lights in studio flicker.  Sound (no video) comes in from the house.  It's the parents and kids and the presenter in the house screaming their heads off.  Howling starts in the studio, eerie, like wailing cats.  All lights, cameras etc. explode.  Picture breaks up to static, with the last exclamation from Parky being "Oh my god what have we done?  We've created the world's biggest seance", followed by screaming that gets cut off.  No credits.  Just ends.

Nice.
