The following position seems to occur frequently, especially in the mid to end game. (At least for me ^^;)

.....
.x...
..o..
.....

(Black to play)

In those times it is typical for there to be a number of black stones above and to the left of this position but some distance away.

Is there a good way of attacking / defending this position?

.xo..

a is a typical response from black.  Is there a better move?

I'd be quite tempted to try

.....
.x...
..o..
.x...
.....

It is not as safe as the previous one, but has more influence in the short term, which is crucial for minimizing whites ground. If white then does the obvious thing, then black can counterattack

.....
.x...
xoo..
.x...
.....

And if white wants to push further, out, will have to go to d, which is not giving too much corner support in the short term. Note that whites potential ground in the bottom line is now quite restricted, making it harder for them to make eyes.

I think white 4 is a better play than white d - watch:

.xxo.
xoo..
.xo..

If black plays at a, white plays at b. Now black c means the loss of black 1,a and c, anything else means lots of space for White in the corner.

If black does not play at 5, White will, giving White a large chunk of side. If black does play at 5, 6 guarantees White the corner.

Anyone care to dispute?
