If I had to choose between summer and winter, my vote would be for the winter.  Why?  Because the problems that plague winter are generally solveable, while the problems that plague summer are not.  Heat, as benefits the heading, is the main one.

Feeling too cold?  Put on a jumper, go for a run, turn the heating on, cuddle up with someone, light a fire ...

Feeling too hot?  Out of luck, mate.  Try eating a load of ice cubes before going to bed, and hope that the effects last long to get to sleep.  Or take a sleeping bag to the air conditioned office.

I suspect that if it were more consistently hot round here, aircon would be much more widespread.  I'm inclined to agree with you though, but perhaps we should revisit this page in six months time.

And people always tell me that summer is the best season in England. -ColinLeung
The best season in England is always the one that's coming up next, and the worst season is always the current one.  It's a British thing. --M-A
Heh, not a terribly inaccurate description, actually.  I was going to say that it depends on personal taste and comment that this has been the nicest year in a long while - white snowy winter, beautiful summer, showery spring.. you just have to forget that everything is shifted a month or two out of place.  --Vitenka
(PeterTaylor) It is. And this year we're getting more than a week of it. Woot?.
AlexChurchill: Absolutely. To (probably mis)quote the great FlandersAndSwann: "Wasn't spring lovely this year?" "Yes, what there was of it... I missed it last year, I was in the bathroom..."
No, no, you wants winter, you does. -- Senji
I like winter.  Cold, crisp air, little atmospheric pollution, no hayfever.  And my healthy VDU anti-tan means that I blend into a snowscape really easily ;-) --Jumlian
Mmm. Winter. Mmmm :) - SunKitten
But winter is bad... cold and gloomy. Hardly any sun or daylight. After all, winter is more hostile, the winter cold claims more life than the summer heat. Finally, IceCream? is just that much more fun in the summer. -ColinLeung
I agree, Winter baaaaaad. The joints in my fingers become very painful due to bad circulation, and even trying to keep them warm by wearing gloves has only a limited effect. Summer might be hot, but only for a very short time, and not every year. Some years we barely have any summer at all.
Some years we barely have any winter at all.
Walking home from work in four inches of snow in sandals (sigh NokkyQuotes/WikiQuoteIndicator) was fun. I like winter. -- Admiral

At least we have seasons, and not just the same temperature all year round.
For a while, I lived in Kenya, which did have nearly the same temperature all year round, with some minor variations. That was actually very nice. -- Admiral
Hear, hear. If it's a good warm temperature, not having seasons isn't too much of a problem (unless you get a drought of the magnitude that Kenya, and indeed East Africa in general, is currently suffering).
We did get a few times when there just wasn't any water available at all, but several times (and it took us a while to figure this one out), some kids turned off our water main tap at the end of the drive. That was funny, since we had managed to get through a week or two of bathing with a washing-up bowl full of water and flushing the loo very sparingly, when we suddenly noticed that our neighbour was watering their garden. -- Admiral
Helps to live on the coast. At least then you can flush the loo with a bucket of seawater.
Hmm. I was about 6 hours drive from the nearest coast. -- Admiral
