Theorised by AbrahamMaslow in the 1950s:

http://chiron.valdosta.edu/whuitt/col/regsys/maslow.html

  1. Physiological: hunger, thirst, bodily comforts, etc.;
  2. Safety/security: out of danger;
  3. Belonginess and Love: affiliate with others, be accepted; and
  4. Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition.

Apparently, from an economics perspective, consumers in developing markets also go through 4 stages:
  1. survival - getting enough food
  2. quality - getting better food
  3. convenience - processed food to save time
  4. customisation - organic, and other individual requirements

The first thing my ethics teacher taught me in college was this, followed by "...and of course, even Dr. Maslow, who created this, doesn't believe it's a hierarchy."  Interesting thought... -ElliottBelser
I put my thoughts on it at [DouglasReay/Freedom] --DR
