A doctrine, unique to RomanCatholicism? as far as PeterTaylor knows, which says that Mary the mother of Jesus was conceived without OriginalSin. AIUI, the RCC holds that this was necessary for her son Jesus to be without OriginalSin. If I understand that correctly, then mathematical induction causes it to fall to pieces.

Emperor's understanding (see for example [The Catholic Encyclopaedia on this subject]) is that it is because of the merits of Jesus that Mary is redeemed from OriginalSin.
Yes - God preserves Mary from OriginalSin at the moment of her soul's creation and infusion into her body, through the merits of Jesus.  So she was never subject to OriginalSin.  This fulfils the prophecy in Genesis (see the Catholic Encyclopedia reference above) that 'I shall put enmity between thee and the woman and her seed'.  Contrast with Jeremiah the Prophet and StJohnTheBaptist?, who Jesus redeems while they are yet in the womb, essentially baptising them.

(PeterTaylor) It seems (thanks to Angela for storing her copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church at TheShrubbery) that the claim is only that it was appropriate for the mother of the saviour to be without sin. I strongly disagree with this claim, as taking away the uniqueness of Christ. There is currently a push by certain groups with the RCC for Mary to be denoted co-redemptrix. This is a logical conclusion of the claim that she was sinless - in fact, why was Christ necessary when Mary could have died for sins? (I really hope a Catholic will pass by and explain why the RCC wouldn't consider the latter statement perfectly sensible).
Mary can't die for our sins because she is not the child of the Holy Ghost, she is "only" the most beautiful work of God's Wisdom.  Jesus's flesh is formed of her flesh, and because of her immaculate conception, no part of him was ever part of one enslaved to His enemy.  That is why Mary, though sinless, is subject to the temporal punishments of Adam (age, sickness, death) while Jesus is not.

Vitenka: If anything ever sounded (to me) like a politicised scientist desperately trying to cover up the massive holes and self contradictions in his theory, it is CatholicDoctrine?.  Religions (seem to me) to have far more credibility when they stick to "It just did, OK?" and "We don't understand that either".  How Catholicism ever got very far, unless it be by force of personality and the early converts being too blinded by the main body of knowledge to start poking at the edges, I may never understand.  (Go Orthodoxy!)
