Ignoring the genesis platform game (with plotlike branch elements)

Ren (Hero, lost father etc. etc.) is on a quest to save the world, following the wishes of his dead father. Who, of course, isn't really dead blah blah blah.
The world in question is a FantasyLand infested with unhappy pirates - unhappy because the flooze from the MyLittlePony movie has invaded (and is called 'dark water') and is making the seas unsailable.
Only the eight relics of blah blah blah can save them.

So, Ren goes to find a ship and a crew. Gets a female ninja / druid / overpowered / secretive / MarySue ;) and a drunkard beserker with an axe. Beserker comes with his own ship, which turns out not to actually be his. They sail off and find a monker-bird stowing away.

Hmm.. that's only four. They musta picked up the second leader or fatguy (depending upon which you class the axeman as) later.

And nothing much really happens. The big evil floating barge (which waterworld stole) chases them, they find relics, they lose relics and it's a perfect SNES RPG.

But it's quite pretty, and very funny - characters (except the uptight Ren) have semi-believable pirate dialogue.
