Annyway.
SonicTwo was arguably the biggest leap for MegaDrive gaming in the series. The first game in the series had set a watermark of 'very very fast' and this one let you run roughly twice as fast. Whilst throwing more coloured stuff, more enemies and so forth at the screen.
Important other features included:
A TwoPlayer? CoOp? mode. PlayerTwo? got infinite lives, but no control over the screen position. In SinglePlayer? mode, the computer controlled player two and was, well, less than optimal.
A ThreeDee? mode. Run along a PlasmaTunnel? style. Not terrible.
Easy levels. (Some) Hard bosses. Lots of optional secrets.
Almost everything had a trick to it - this let you impress people by breezing through things that they got stuck on, and being able to do it so quickly that they couldn't really tell how you did it. --Vitenka (It also lead to amusing failures)
Oh, and PlayerTwo?'s character happened to be an insanely cute Fox?. --MoonShadow(That has nothing to do with my recommendation. Honest! --Vitenka)
After this game we got SonicThree? and SonicAndKnuckles? which added more 'stuff' more plot and not noticeably more gameplay. Then masses of spinoffs. SonicThreeDee?, SonicRacing?, SonicSpinball? (ooh, found another badd egg in the series) and MeanBeanMachine? (columns!) - and a TypingTutor? MathsChallenge? thingy.
Leaving the MegaDrive behind, SonicTeam? went on to produce some insane DreamCast games - and also SonicAdventure? (one and two - three is rumoured to be in development for GameCube) which is ThreeDee? and... different.
