I'm sure people will want to list Dizzy, various NES? games and other such here (although quite a few are still available due to the wonders of emulation and the like)

As a complete coincidence someone is currently playing the MonkeyIsland theme tune at me...

Anyway, the reason I'm starting this page is mainly so I can ask for help identifying an old arcade game...

Your point of view was from behind the main character who was flying 'into' the screen using a jet pack so you could control your position.  You were flying 'forward' at a fixed, quite fast, rate over a landscape with various enemies coming at you.  The most memorable of the enemies was the end of level dragon who was made of a chain of (round, I think) segments and flew in figure of eights in front of you.  Any ideas? --Kazuhiko
Ohhhh. I didn't remember what you said until you mentioned the dragon who flew in figures-of-eight.  That does evoke something, though.  No idea what the game was though |-)  --AlexChurchill
One of the first games to use digitised voice too.  "Get ready!"  And the name was....  SpaceHarrier?  --Vitenka (HateItWhenThatHappens?)
Arigato! :) Well remembered... --Kazuhiko
Get Shenmue for the dreamcast.  The Saturn version of SpaceHarrier? is in it. --Mjb67
Got - but thought it was just a nifty item, not something playable.  (Shenmue is as close to unplayable as I've ever seen)  --Vitenka

Listing all the games I remember fondly playing "when ah were a lad" would take quite a long time.  So I'll just list some outstanding memories.  In no particular order:

As Kazu mentioned, Dizzy
Spindizzy Worlds
Snapper, an old PacMan? clone for the AcornElectron?
GreatGianaSisters?, an utterly blatant rip-off of SuperMarioBrothers?
Worms, back in the days before AndyDavidson? got it released and it was still known as Lem-Artillery, due to using sprites ripped straight from Lemmings
Civilization
LordsOfChaos and LaserSquad?
NewZealandStory?
BattleIsle
CarrierCommand
HeadOverHeels

Here's a couple of possibly more obscure ones...
FestersQuest? on the NES
Loom

There are many more, but that'll do for now...

PeterTaylor was a KOTS fan.

I have fond memories of my old spectrum games: things like Millymon, Jack the Nipper, Curse of Sherwood... I even had a version of the Python Quest for the Holy Grail, but it was hard to use.  And incredibly innane.  Oh, and the best one had to be boulderdash.  That game ro... was really good.  --FR
