So you've discovered The Secret
(Now please don't tell anyone)
OK, you're about to be initiated into the biggest conspiracy that there is:
1. We are not alone Aliens are out there. Lots of them.
2. Governments know, and keep it quiet. Yup. Sure do.
3. It's been going on for years. Since early Bablyon, at least.
4. Earth has a permanent military presence in space. We hope so.....
Wait a moment for that to sink in. Offer Agents Smith and Jones a cup of tea. Then read on.
We've been keeping The Secret. There's all sorts of reasons for this; keeping people from panicing being the main one. Another is our intent to slowly build earths technology base to the point at which we would be competitive with alien cultures, and thus able to stand our own - before announcing ourselves and going exploring.
But now there's a really big reason - and it's the same reason we're revealing The Secret to a select few.
Earth is, as of a few months ago, under the military control of a somewhat disturbing alien race known as 'the Narxbloche'. We (the shadow government) are preventing their overt control by presenting all the same reasons for secrecy and conspiracy that lead you to stumble onto us.
Even so - their control of us, secret though it is, chafes - and stops humanity from taking its proper place amongst the stars.
The invasion has, of course, put a stop to our plans for a slow technology build. Now we find ourselves having to perform a crash advance, and do it in secret.
So; our main bright hope for the future lies with a dual-purpose space station, out in the asteroid belt. Openly, it is a mining station - providing a large part of our tithe to our new alien masters. In actuality - it is earth's first foray into the exceiting realm of interstellar piracy.
The station needs staff, the experimental starships need crew...
