A very good ShootEmUpFreeWare.  Simple.  (For windows)

[HomePage for it]

Very simple, very shiny.  Compelling.

Releasing fire allows you to refocus your cone of fire - you can shoot at any angle, and as wide as 120 degrees or as narrow as about five.

Every level is a BossFight?.  Nothing but boss fights.  On and on.  "!Warning!  Boss approaching!"  Forever.  (Hence the name)

The bosses evolve based upon your fighting style.  Blow them up at the front a lot, and they evolve armour.  Get sneaky and go round the back, and they develop lots of weapons.  Prefer to blow up the core, and they tend to grow beam weapons.  Poke around the site for a while to find a graph of the evolution used.

Each boss consists of weapons (missiles, beams, explosive spray and vulcan) and semi-mobile arms.  They attach in a simple graph - so blowing up a core bit causes lots of bits to fall off.

In true boss style, each part is usually more dangerous once you cut bits of it off.

I found the [evolution map], but it's a bit on the basic side...  Have you had any luck changing the result?  I always end up with a multi-winged something-or-other and haven't seen one of the ones from the centre column yet (have been to stage 14ish) --K
Well, you don't get the last stages until stage 15+ for starters - but I guess it's working as intended, since I almost always end up with the middle one.  To change it, you have to repeatably blow it up the same way - either from the extremeties inwards, going for the roots and core first, or concentrating on attacking from the back (where it starts off very weak, but quickly grows towards you)  The only one I've had trouble creating is the spherical one.  --Vitenka
Wow...  So you've seen all the centre column but the "Ise One"?  What about the right column?  I did get the Asura last night which is to be expected I guess, although I almost always use the same tactic of attacking the central joints. --K
Ah, no.  I've seen all of the right column, and very little of the middle one :)  Getting out of the habit of attacking the middle joints is the way to see the others.  It helps if you change some of the options - it's much harder in the time challenge mode to get anywhere by any other strategy.  --Vitenka

Nice game. I've seen most of the middle column, including the Asura, but none of the right hand one. Am I right in thinking that the central core is invulnerable if it has anything much still attached to it? It seems that sometimes you can damage if it only has one or two small bits left, but otherwise, it's impossible... -- Xarak
Oh no.  I've destroyed some of the big winged ones by taking out the arms/wings on one side completely and then just barraging that side.  Works moderately well but can take a while.  I'm guessing that either a) the more bits that are attached, the less percentage damage you do when you hit the core or b) destroying connected bits damages the bits they are connected to so once you have blown up all the extras you have already done most of the damage. --K
Inner bits can shunt damage out to the outer bits - you'll sometimes see the 'repairing' glow on a bit you've not been shooting if you stop barraging the core for a moment.  So it's fastest to take out MOST of the outer bits, then barrage the core.  --Vitenka  (And you get spherical by taking out the outermost tip of each arm and then barrage the core without taking out the arms completely until very late on.  It's kind of difficult, since taking out the weapons leads the arms to develop erratic shots, which are hard to dodge.)
