"Me bored. You! Make pretty noise!"

The AI was clearly not advanced enough to understand a simple request without having to go into technical specifics.

"Please clarify", it said in its calm, unperturbed voice.

"Make pretty elevator noise!"

"Music, sir. Yes, sir." The AI connected its speakers to the Elevator Multicast output.

D546 tapped his fingers thoughtfully as he considered the tinny notes emanating from the speakers. This wasn't quite what he was after. Yesterday's muzak had been racier, faster, more exciting; today's was bland, somehow. He didn't know the technical terms "Rock" and "Classical"; but he could feel the difference, and wanted the former.

"Wrong noise. Want other noise. Faster noise."

"Yes, sir." The AI started correlating its database of music against its records of D546's movements and habits, in an attempt to select the most appropriate piece.

"Make the noise be faster." D546 wasn't used to a request taking this long, so thought to clarify himself to aid the poor, stupid AI's understanding. Alas! The unwieldy technical terms he had not been trained to use permitted a miswording. The AI interpreted his request literally, and acted to alter the tempo of the music currently playing. Since it was a broadcast, this involved some negotiation with the central controller; but Clone orders were paramount.

Thousands of elevators all over the plannet rocked as clones tapped their feet to the new tune. This was unprecedented! This was exciting!

But it wasn't what D546 had been expecting.

"No, no. Get rid of that and make yesterday after-lunch noise."

"Yes, sir." Finally understanding its owner's need, the AI was happy to comply. Thousands of clones on the verge of heart attacks halted their dancing as the muzak returned to soothing jangle once more, and the world was saved yet again by D546's quick thinking.
