Which makes you wonder what the people naming the Normandy Invasion "Operation Overlord" were thinking.
Apparently "overlord" meant "one to whom a lord swore fealty" and, as such, most Barons would count as overlords. A search for reputedly good barons turns up Baron Tassilo von Heydebrand (famed for playing a decent game of chess) and Baron Channing of Wellingborough (who taught philosophy at Oxford). --DR
