Very depressing book. No, seriously. I cannot stress enough how depressing this book is. If you are liable to suicide, don't read this book. Don't, whatever you do, give this book to unsuspecting people without warning them.

I think it's by NickHornby?, but I could be mistaken (You're not: it is! - Andrew).

It's also rather good. I literally couldn't put it down. The style is good, such that the book almost hurts to read in some places. Not my usual choice of reading material, but very good nonetheless. Thought-provoking.

Basically, it's a tale of depression and alienation and the breakdown of happy suburban middle-class life, told from the perspective of a good woman who is suddenly forced to change her home life so it actually does something for those less fortunate than herself. Oh - and in a funny way it's a love story, but as far removed from WAFF as it is possible to get.

I remember finding the ending quite strange. It was quite a depressing book, but if I'm honest I didn't actually find it that good. I think I enjoyed High Fidelity more. - Andrew
