Series of naval novels by Patrick O'Brien. Noted for the painstaking research of the politics and warfare and (more importantly) incredibly realistic characters who are truly of their time rather than the awful pastiche characters that MerchantIvory subjects us to.

The first book is Master and Commander. Read them in order. This isn't always easy to do because there are loads of them and they aren't numbered. Post Captain is the second book.
