• Read, and disregard, [this site].
  
• Install yumex and FreshRPMs? (follow link from [here])
  
• Load yumex and install Xine and MPlayer. (Presumably both of these aren't necessary?)
  
• Get the essential-codec pack from [here]
  
• Copy the contents of the pack (just the files, not the folder) into /usr/lib/win32
  
• Try a file in Xine and be greatly surprised when it actually works.
  
• Find out that the reason I don't use Xine is that it is either slower than MPlayer or just can't cope with wmv9 (discards roughly 50% of frames)
  
• Find that MPlayer fails to open any video and find [this post]
  
• Change the video preference settings for MPlayer off xvmc and onto xv.
  
• All (?) media are now playable in MPlayer.
