Something stirred at the back of her consciousness. There was something that needed doing, somewhere she needed to be.. She had a 9am!

Ten minutes later, ruffled and cursing, missing her shower, she came off the steam-tram outside the Cavendish Natural Research lab for her basic alchemy lecture.

Note to OP - alchemy actually uses magic to cause reactants to cross enthalpy thresholds; in a world without magic, your character would have to be studying a different subject entirely. - Kurai

Presumably, without magic to cross enthalpy thresholds, they'd have to do it with pure energy - heat, perhaps. In light of which, may I suggest "enchemy"? - Karovai
