Computers can render better graphics than Tron ever did, in real time. So, um, let's do that then. That light cycle game wasn't bad when played with top down snakes. It becomes very very good when played first person.
About the only problem with Armagetron is that there's so very very many options. Tweak fov, tweak the camera, try and work out how to set up the players (hint: You have to set up the player, and then assign each player to a particular part of the screen) and then work out how to set up the game mode and...
Anyway. Once you're in, it's great. The twiddly improvement of "Turning slows you down a bit, running very very close to a wall makes you speed up a lot" makes for an action game rather than a puzzle game. (Though boxing the enemy in is still good) and just like tron the movie (but unlike the light cycle games I remember) - when someone dies, their walls come down.
This is a perfect rico. You'll love it. You'll play it to death. That death will happen in about a fortnight. Then you'll forget all about it until someone reminds you.
What it does right
Very few controls. (Turn left, turn right - if you like, control the camera.) Action is fast, and customisably so. The AI is good, and adapts in difficulty. The aim is instantly recognisable (don't crash).
What it does wrong
There's no depth to it. AI never really changes. This is a multiplayer game at heart. There's lots of extra information displayed at the bottom of the screen, which is at best meaningless and distracting. The messages for winning/losing are unclear (too many CompSci in-jokes) and the team-win condition is arcane. This is related to: Setting the damn thing up is a PITA.
