I'm guessing 2-6 with a sweet spot of 3-4.

We could do player colours, but we're already using colour for quite a lot, and it might be better to give each noble house a symbol.

Colours taken by /TerrainTypes: Brown, Grey, Light Green, (one shade of) Blue

Colours taken by /Goods: Purple, Red, Black, White, Yellow, Dark Green.

Yeah, that uses quite a lot of spots on the colour wheel. Not yet taken: Orange, cyan, other shades of blue, pink.

The problem with symbols for players is that players will be building long thin things (roads, rivers/canals, rail tracks), and a road built by player A is very different from a road built by player B for purposes of taxing what goes along it. And there's no proposed rules for stealing control. You could have a circular player-control-symbol placed in a hex, along with neutral-coloured roads/etc going through that hex.
Cutting down on physical components, rather than each player having roads, rivers and rails, it would be nicer to have a global pool of those - vastly cuts down on the number of components needed. --DR

If the ability to tax a good going along a route depends upon the cities near the route, rather than who built it, do we need to mark who built each individual link? --DR

Alternatively, I wonder if goods could be represented instead by symbols rather than single-colour blobs. That'd free up black, white, red, yellow and purple to be player colours, and we could use coloured pieces for roads/railroads/canals in the natural way. Playtest proxies being roads from Settlers / OnTheUnderground, trains from TicketToRide?, etc.
