Oh!  It looks like in some parts of the world (notably bits of North America) this is the name for red squirrels.  Big bushy red tails seem to be the only reason.

Also, apparently, North American native foxes climb trees.  Which lead the colonists to introduce European red ones so that they'd have something the hounds could hunt.  --Vitenka
