Genre: Platformers, puzzle based.
Platform: Win32.
Rico factor: Two.
Multiplayer: Nope.

Good old fashioned puzzle games.
There are basically two: WithinADeepForest? and Knytt.
The third, Knytt-stories is "Here's the level editor for Knytt, have fun."  Which it is, ut ;et's talk about the main ones first.
Not quite.  Knytt is one of Nifflas' older games.  It's simple exploration in a big world.  Pretty but gets a bit boring in the long run.  Knytt Stories is much more of what you would call a game and even by itself has a number of "stories" made by Nifflas which, although big on the exploration thing are much closer to most people's view of a game.  The fact Knytt Stories also has a level editor built in was more of the icing on the cake for me. --K

Both are based around freely exploring a map and collecting power-ups to expand your ability to go further.

Deep-forest uses a mechanic similar to wizball - you have to bounce your way to victory.
Knytt is a more traditional run-and-jump affair.

In both, your character is completely unable to fight back.  Enemies are things to figure out ways to bypass (and sometimes tests of skill) rather than things to fight.

What went right

Fantastic atmosphere.  Style is reused just enough to make sure you're familiar with it, without spending too long on a single theme, allowing some sense of progress and ability to track yourself.

They also introduce a nice subtle way to explain 'this is dangerous' (which isn't always obvious, both games feature quite a lot of harmless mobs) - your character glows red as you approach.  (As a powerup, but.)

It also has a powerup for "This way to the nearest thing you have to collect" which is nice, especially in such a large map.
Both the above paragraphs refer to Knytt (Stories).  The atmosphere, however, definitely applies to WithinADeepForest? as well --K

Both games do a very good job of making sure that there's a few different ways you can progress, most choke-points have a couple of different solutions, and once passed (and the next powerup collected) are usually very easy to bypass the next time.
Er, really? That doesn't seem to be the case for Knytt at all. The powerups don't do anything at all, and most choke points have exactly one solution and are bypassed in precisely the same way each time. Haven't tried Deep Forest yet. --AC
Huh?  Knytt has several useful powerups.  And there's plenty of choke points which are bypassed differently in each direction, and then later bypassed by (for example) just double jumping.  --Vitenka
[Knytt]? Nope. No powerups do anything (they confirmed that on the forum [here]), and there's no double-jump. You might be thinking of Knytt Stories, which I also haven't tried. --AC
h, I wasn't aware there was a Knytt game other than Knytt stories.  Sorry.  --Vitenka

What went wrong

No automap.  Not even a metroid style 'these rooms connect together' one.
That's a pretty big omission, leading to your never quite being sure if you've missed something.
