In the former he advocated falsificationism, which is the doctrine that a proposition is only scientific if it can be proven wrong by empirical evidence.
In the latter he argued for TheOpenSociety?, which is essentially the social vision of classical liberalism, a free market of ideas. This is as opposed to totalitarian societys in which certain ideas are banned, and more generally, any society which is ruled by a single school of thought. Communism was his main target, and he wrote several books attacking it.
The two aspects of his philosophy go together quite neatly because TheOpenSociety? allows for the falsification of bad political ideas, and hence, the advancement of society.
