I'm running a series of long tests at work, so I thought I'd fill in this page with a rough translation of [the French list of two-player variants]. Note that what is defined as the official Alea variant - variant A - is not quite the official Alea variant. They suggest that, starting with Governer, each player takes 3 roles, leaving none unselected. It's generally agreed that this is a pants idea.

Notes:
Variant A is (roughly) the official Alea variant.
Variant B is by Tom Lehmann, published on BoardGameGeek
Variant C is a mix of A and B.
Variant D is by Joe Casadonte, publshed on BoardGameGeek. Each player has 2 boards.

Additional Rules (Variants A, B and C):
The Governor starts by choosing a role and playing it as normal.
Then, the other player does the same.
Finally, the Governor chooses a second role, and plays it as normal.
The unchosen roles get a doubloon, the Governorship passes, and the game continues.
All other standard rules apply.

Additional Rules (Variant D):
Each player takes 2 colony boards. Turn order is Player 1 Board A; Player 2 Board A; Player 1 Board B; Player 2 Board B.
Play as the 4-player game.

Scoring Variant D
Score each board separately. There are 3 possible ways to determine the winner:

Each player adds the score of his two boards. The greater total wins.
Players compare the scores of the better of their two boards. Higher score wins.
Players compare the scores on the worse of their two boards. Higher score wins.
This forces players to develop their boards as equally as possible (maybe even almost sabotaging their own higher-score board to bring the lower one back up)
