I decided a long time ago that I didn't care if I was altruistic for selfist reasons, just as long as I did stuff that helped people. And that if infact it benefits me in a way which encourages me to keep on helping people, all the better. --DR
Last time MoonShadow had this discussion, it was concluded that there was no such thing as a truly unselfish action - everything people do, they do with the goal of increasing their own happiness (which is not something that trivially maps to pleasure, lack of physical pain etc etc).
I've sometimes thought that, but the problem is, it's impossible to disprove that statement. E.G even if someone really did do something totally unselfish, any wise guy could just say "Ah, but you were doing for personal happiness even if you don't know it!", and how can you prove them wrong? I think that people are capable of purely altruistic actions, but I do see your point. -- Xarak
I would disagree with that. I am of the opinion that, with enough social conditioning, people can be convinced to do anything no matter how dumb. I supply evidence in the form of SuicideBombers - here is another case of people doing something stupid because they're convinced that it will be good for them in the long term. - CorkScrew
