Early morning at a high school.
CLASSROOM - INT. - DAY Everyone is seated and in the grasp of an excruciating test.
Center on the form of YUKINO, 16, redhead, slim, in a blazer-style school uniform, focused intently on her test, chewing her eraser, then brushing her bangs out of her eyes and marking down answers.
ANNOUNCER: Yukino Miyazawa had a 'perfect' life.
CLASSROOM - INT. - EVENING.
Yukino smiles at her "110% - Excellent job, you even got the extra credit!" note on the top of her test.
ANNOUNCER: Perfect grades.
LOCKER ROOM - INT. - DAY.
From inside the locker. Yukino examines herself in the mirror as she applies a contact lens.
ANNOUNCER: Perfect looks.
BUS STOP - EXT. - DAY. Late in the day. Yukino examines notes held up by smiling 'friends' in turn.
ANNOUNCER: Perfect friends.
YUKINO'S HOUSE DINING ROOM - INT. - NIGHT
Yukino in far more drab clothing and glasses. Rises to bus her plate and cup.
When she leaves the room, her FATHER and Sisters EMI and YUMI look on with concern.
EMI: She's no fun anymore.
YUMI: She _scares_ me.
FATHER: Until she has a grand total of one green bean for dinner, I think it's harmless.
He doesn't sound convinced.
YUKINO'S HOUSE - EXT. - NIGHT
Yukino's light is the only one on as she studies late into the night.
She rises from her desk, then turns it off.
LOCKER ROOM - INT. - DAY Yukino walks towards the bulletin board, among a babbling crowd.
ANNOUNCER: Until one day...
She looks at the board with a supremely confident expression.
Her jaw drops.
CLOSEUP OF: Yukino's ranking, 2 out of 115.
CLOSEUP OF: The first ranking, "Soichiro, Arima."
Yukino is _not_ pleased.
YUKINO: Who the _hell_ is Arima?
She turns and...
ZOOM IN ON: The tall, dark-haired, and handsome form of the gentle ARIMA, who smiles. There are quite a few girls casting glances his way.
ANNOUNCER: When _he_ entered her life.
BGM: Dancing in Dreams, now _much_ faster and more uptempo.
DINNER TABLE - INT. - NIGHT.
Yukino, in her drab costume, stabs her eggplant parmesan with a look of rage in response to a question. EMI and YUMI recoil from this.
YUKINO: I have to beat Arima! I study until after midnight and that arrogant son of a bitch knocks me out of the top in a WEEK?!
MOTHER: I keep telling you that I don't _care_ what grades you get as long as you do well and you're happy, Yuke.
LOCKER ROOM - INT. - DAY Yukino checks her ranking: No. 1, again. She grins, pumps her arms and whirls - to face Arima.
YUKINO: Guess who's number one, Arima!
Arima beams.
ARIMA: That's wonderful. I'm sure it took a lot of effort.
He walks away, leaving a stunned Yukino processing his words.
YUKINO: ...wait, what?
SCHOOL GROUNDS - EXT. - DAY Lunchtime. Yukino is sitting against a tree on a very green hill, watching Arima from afar, not eating her sandwich - just staring, somewhat sad.
BGM: Angel's Oath, with lyrics. "You may dream, that your stirring heart..."
YUKE'S LIVING ROOM - INT. - DAY Yuke, in DrabWear?(TM), pets her sleeping dog, musing out loud.
ANNOUNCER: Now, Yukino will start to learn...
YUKINO: Compared to him... I'm nothing more than a poser.
LOCKER ROOM - INT. - NIGHT Arima grabs Yukino's collar as she tries to walk away, and is shocked to see Yukino's eyes full of tears.
ANNOUNCER: That perfection is overrated.
BGM: "...is the rustling of angel's wings, allowing you to ascend to..."
YUKINO: Why do you keep doing this to me!?
ARIMA: Because it's the only way I had the _guts_ to talk to you!
Yukino stares: Arima closes his eys and scratches the back of his head, before trying to smile and making more of an embarrased grimace.
