I always thought it was 'lots of laughs' as well... which is subtley different (I can think of lots of things I'd type lol to in a quiet "that's funny" way that didn't come close to making me laugh out loud) - Sally

Probably one of those 'irrelevant but true' things :) I have come across LOL for 'lots of love' although not as commonly as 'laughs out loud'. Context ought to make it clear, although thinking about it, given the apparent (il)literacy of many 'net users, this ought not to be taken for granted >:> --MikeJeggo
