Most are really strange, really. Take pelicans; what has slapping each other's beak and doing a strange dance got to do with having the better genes and the best chance of survival? Humans have even more absurd MatingRituals, involving thousands of different kinds of beak slappings and dances, that can take from an evening to a few years, and may or may not involve various chemicals such as pheromones or even alcohol; they may even involve stranger things, such as love. Oh, and the purpose might not even be the passing of genes. Strange. -ColinLeung

And why does this Wiki page have a link to itself?
Many do. --Kazuhiko
And many others do not.  It is all a part of the grand mystery of wiki.
