Ever had the feeling, while reading a sentence, that the bit you are reading doesn't mean anything? "Once upon a time"... what does it mean? Not as a set phrase, but literally? Can you define it without using any of the words it consists of?

In the distant, and probably mythical, past... -- Senji

"Ima wa mukashi" in Japanese Buddhist parables... which literally translates as "now is the past." -- Nataku

I remember back in InfantSchool? asking a teacher how you spelt 'onceuponatime' since we'd been asked to write a story - and I knew that all good stories began with that mysterious word.  --Vitenka
