Japanese for "girl".

Used as an adjective when describing anime/manga, anime/manga intended for a female audience. Usually characterised by the presence of romance, a promising storyline and interesting plot. Some series fail to deliver, unsurprisingly.

I believe the technical definition of Shoujo series used to include having a female mangaka and possibly belonging to a particular group of mangaka. It has now become used to just describe the general style as described above though. -- Kazuhiko
