Interestingly (or maybe not) Ghibli is pronounced in Japanese "Jibli", but comes from an Italian word pronounced "Gibli" so I guess that's the preferred international pronunciation. So sayeth the official FAQ (if I understand it correctly). The Italian word is the name of the Saharan wind, and was used to name some Italian WWII planes. Miyazaki is an aeroplane fan.
