We arranged for a carpet to be delivered and fitted, and they said they'd give us the first slot of the day, which would be about 9:30 or 10, so that I could wait and let them in and only be slightly late for work, rather than having to actually take any time off.
I was still waiting at 11ish, and phoned the shop. They said traffic was bad first thing in the morning, especially on Elizabeth Way bridge, so the fitter had gone on to another job before ours. No idea why they didn't tell us this, or why traffic on Elizabeth Way bridge is relevant since we and the shop are the same side of it. They offered to make the appointment for tomorrow instead. I said that was worse, because I'd already waited in a few hours and would then need to take time off tomorrow as well (also, isn't traffic likely to be just as bad tomorrow?)
The fitter finally turned up at about five to twelve. He was on his own, so I had to help move the furniture and carry the huge carpet up from his van. I asked why there weren't two people, and he said he couldn't get anyone else to come with him because they were all busy (I wonder how far in advance he asked). He seemed nice enough though, and lives next door to SunKitten and MoonShadow. Oh, and he wanted me to pay cash instead of a cheque, which I thought sounded like a tax dodge, but I truthfully told him I hardly had any because the shop had said a cheque would be fine.
I'm vaguely toying with the idea of sending the shop a letter of complaint and/or a bill for a morning's lost earnings and an hour's work at the hourly wage of a carpet fitter's assistant. I'll contrast that. For us they turned up and finished up a couple of days before they said they would. They did try to charge us extra because 'our doors were thicker than they expected' but they didn't make much of an issue of it. --Vitenka
