File Transfer Protocol

Means of moving files around between machines over a network.

Now largely considered obsolete --Angoel
By whom?  Quite possibly from a security/progress point of view, but it terms of actual usage, this would seem to be alive and well. --Kazuhiko
By me, anyhow.  Rightly or wrongly ;).  For anonymous file downloads, HTTP tends to be a more robust medium, for mirroring purposes rsync is more efficient.  Randomly copying stuff around works better with SCP and friends, because the compression speeds the transfer.  FTP only seems to stay alive on the big sites that have always supported it, where changing it would cause more aggravation with everyone else's scripts, etc. than it's worth, and amongst the people who decide to enable every service on their computer, because they can.  In my limited experience, anyway. --Angoel
PeterTaylor uses it quite a bit for file transfers across the office network, and also uses it for updating his website. In his experience, the encryption cost of SCP outweighs the compression saving.

ToDo: RFC link(s).

FTP is hardly obsolete.  It lets you put stuff up and have it sent anywhere.  It is easier to create uploadable areas than HTTP.  It supports simple passwords.  Its best use is as a scratch space for something quick.  In a closed environment, SAMBA is slightly more powerful and easy to use - but you'd never want to let that on the internet.  --Vitenka
