Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is StudioGainax? rebuilding it to EPIC PROPORTIONS. How epic? The mecha run on the HotBlooded? impulses of the pilots (well, Spiral Energy, but tomAYto, tomAHto...)
The main character, Simon, finds a drill-shaped pendant - the key to the mecha known as "Gurren," and his ticket out of his underground hell-hole existence. Simon is a lot like ShinjiIkari? - very shy, very unsure of himself, estranged and/or dead parents - The difference is that the bastard known as GendouIkari? was Shinji's mentor: Simon's mentor is the most BADASS mecha pilot in the history of Anime, KaminaSama? (well, technically not Sama, but he DESERVES it,) who once PUNCHED Simon out of a "Mustn't run away" mental Blue Screen of Death. Also responsible for my new favorite line in all anime fandom:
Kamina: Damn it, Simon! We can do this!
Simon: I... I wish I had that much confidence in myself!
Kamina: If you cannot beleive in yourself... beleive in my faith in YOU!
Also, at one point, the titular mecha gets a size upgrade and ends up wearing the ICantBeleiveItsNot? SpaceBattleshipYamato? as a HAT.
I downloaded the first couple of Eps of this series and decided to leave well alone. Unless you like an anime with a massive boob/crotchshot quotient, I suggest you do the same. --Tsunami

Takes combining giant mecha to ridiculous levels.
This series rocks - one of those very good examples of anime that completely changes its flavour (almost unexpectedly) at various points to really good effect. Kamina is one of the most ludicrous anime characters I've seen in a while. Kamina rocks, and I wanna be in the Dai-Gurren Brigade!! - Nagi PS there is a boob/crotchshot element, and what's usually funny is which characters get the last laughs out of those...
Is apparently on the Sci Fi Channel at 8:00 Pacific on Mondays in my neck of the woods. Dubbed, but the dub isn't a total [macekre] and the voices are actually appropriate (though I could have sworn that Yoko was a soprano before). Score.
