Origin of the character DuncanIdaho, whose name is used by one of the ToothyWiki contributors:
Duncan Idaho taught Paul Atreides how to fight. He defended him, mentored him and remained a loyal friend, despite the Bene Tleilaxu's actions.
The books
A science fiction series. The books in the series are called: Dune (ISBN 0450011844 ) Dune Messiah Children Of Dune God Emperor Of Dune Heretics Of Dune Chapter House Dune
There are also some novels co-authored by Brian Herbert (not sure of relation with Frank) and Kevin J Anderson, working from Frank's notes. They are (IMHO) a worthy addition to the Dune mythos, and include at the time of writing: House Corrino House Atreides House Harkonnen The Butlerian Jihad
MoonShadow: The book is excellent. I've not read many of the sequels. The movie is an OK movie as movies go, but totally fails as a movie of the book.
The movie and other motion picture adaptations
The original movie by David Lynch was released in 1984. It runs for 137 mins, and was a savage cut of the truly enormous amount of footage that Lynch had shot.
A TV network (not sure which) re-cut Lynch's footage to 176 mins and released it as a mini-series. Lynch has disowned this version, and is credited under the pseudonyms Alan Smithee (director) and Judas Booth (screenplay, using the names of two traitors).
Lynch has promised a "Director's Cut" version of more than 180 mins.
In 2000 there was another TV series directed by John Harrison. It consists of three 90-minute episodes. The series is much much closer to the book - but not as pure fun as the movie. I guess in the tradition of all OVAs you have to have seen the movie as well, and salivate for the series ;)
I have heard of a Japanese cut of Lynch's footage, but I don't know anything about it.
The computer games
That was a good computer game. Shame I lost it... M-A M-A: which one? There were a good half dozen of the things. I have copies of the first two, if you're interested.. - MoonShadow
How should I describe it? Well, you played the part of Paul, gradually found out more of the history of the planet and where the natives' villages were, and you could ride on the sandworms. Having just trawled the web for 20 minutes, I think it looked a bit like Dune II, but with less functionality. M-A
I have that on CD. Somewhere. It might be in Cardiff :( I'll take a look when I next remember. - MoonShadow
There have been several computer game adaptations of Dune, including: Dune
Part battle game, part RPG, mostly resource management. The one that M-A is talking about above.
Dune II
For a while the best RTS around. Added a new House (the Ordos). Battle for control of Dune!
I believe the Ordos are supposed to fill in for CHOAM in the background -- Senji
But can't you build a spaceport and order things from CHOAM no matter which house you are? --Mjb67
Emperor: Battle for Dune
An RTS. Quite good, in Mjb67's limited experience of the genre. Don't just battle over Dune, battle over spaceships and enemy planets to be the Emperor!
I also have the 1st and 2nd installments, altho would the old copies still run on the faster machines we have now? (must try it out) Never did finish either, used to get distracted by just flying the ornithopters around the desert - the travelling music was really catchy I seem to recall :) --Wikivic
