having visible roof beams and other similar architectural features
having an open fire
being conducive to people sitting and talking without straining their lungs and vocal cords

I recall some pub not far from the RealityCheckpoint which was a no-smoking pub. This seems like a good thing, but you do find afterwards that you smell of stale ale instead of cigarette smoke. It does at least allow you to breathe normally whilst drinking, and I think the food was of an acceptable standard, if a little too far from ClareColony? -- ColinT
