Can range from the whole story pivoting around it to just a 'That's cool' moment. Most take the form of the 'hardest' or 'sharpest' substance known in the world/universe/multiverse/local neighbourhood
A few things have Adamantium (notably Wolverine and the X-men universe, but I'm sure it's cropped up elsewhere)
Orihalcon (sp?) seems quite widespread (HyperPolice comes to mind)
Do you mean orichalcum?
Presumably. The RPGExalted has five magical materials, one for each class of heroes - orichalcum, moonsilver, starmetal, jade and soulsteel. Of these, only orichalcum and jade actually exist, although the description of starmetal suggests "iridium".
In HyperPolice and Slayers, it's definitely 'orihalcon'. But that could be a variant of 'orichalcum' - SunKitten
I always thought of starmetal as being meteoric iron. It's very different from normal iron in most fantasy settings.
Does dilithium crystal count? Or is it a power source?
In some mythologies, Mythril is a MagicalMineral, and/or the 'hardest'/'sharpest'/etc mineral around. In others, it's just a metal like silver.
Neutronium. Pure squashed neutrons...!
And how could anyone forget Kryptonite!
ADoM has eternium. It also has mithril and adamantium, but they're not as generally shiny as eternium.
Somehow the spice Melange got missed off this list, possibly for not being hard or sharp
...
On a related note, some (also) have the "Magical Power Source":
LastExile has Claudia, which may not be a power source but does rather help the flying ships keep flying. PatapataHikosenNoBouken? has, I'm told, magic blue sand which does about the same thing as Claudia.
From that, Claudia (Cloudia?) certainly sounds like the same thing; I expect it doesn't produce the same calibre of ColossalDeathWeaponry as the blue sand does, though.
